Today I would like to talk about 1718 Brewing in Ocracoke, North Carolina. This brewery is on the historic Outer Banks Island call Ocracoke. Brief history lesson, Ocracoke was the island hideout of the famous Blackbeard (Edward Teach). He made this island his hideout during the golden age of piracy and I am sure that in true pirate fashion he and his men drank their fair share of beer and rum. I have read that Blackbeard was killed in battle with British Forces off the immediate coast of Ocracoke. Today there is little evidence that pirates where there, but no worries, we still wanted to get out to this island and it is a fun place to visit at least once. Plenty on modern day shopping, walking paths, parks, beaches, fishing and lastly……..1718 Brewing.
1718 Brewing is on the outskirts of the downtown and harbor area in a large modern building with a ton of seating inside and outside. You also can see most of the operation when inside. The staff was friendly and welcoming. My brother and I made our selection for samples and headed to a table outside to enjoy the nice weather. My wife and kids were outside waiting when my daughter, of course, asked for something to drink. So when I went back inside to get my wife a beer, I asked what they had for kids to drink. To my delight and my kids delight they had soda available and they put it taster glasses so the kids felt included! My kids were happy as could be.
The beer there was great, we had a ginger beer called Belgian Ginger Whit that we really good, and another that stood out to me was the Brunch: Coffee Kolsch. But honestly all the beer was great! I felt refreshed after having drank them and I had been walking around all day. We stayed for some time to enjoy our beer and the weather. I went back for another pint of the ginger.
Overall the brewery was not too crowded, but we went in April, so it was off season still there. The staff was great, friendly and ready to serve you. I felt welcome there. As far as getting to the brewery, you do need to take a ferry ride to get to the island itself and back. We had to leave the brewery a little earlier than we wanted to catch on of the last boats back to the rest of the Outer Banks. They obviously were kid friendly, but I am not sure about pet friendly. I did not look for any and I did not see any dogs there when we were there.
Unfortunately, my time spent there was too short, but in that short time I had a great experience and it now is one of my favorites. So if you are looking for something to do on the Outer Banks, make the trip down to Ocracoke and check out 1718 Brewing! You won’t regret it! I have provided the address, facebook site (they don’t have a regular website) and phone number for reference below, provided by a quick Google search. So go check them out, go have an adventure and try new things!! Please Drink Responsibly.
