I travel around to many breweries, so to stand out in my eyes you really have to be unique. Well Stars & Stripes Brewing Company in Freeport, Maine certainly is unique and deserves credit for the great beer they have.
When I had first heard about Stars and Stripes Brewing Company it was always “You need to check this place out”, “You need to go! It’s definitely your style!”. So naturally I found my way there and have been back a few times since.
Let’s start with the atmosphere. It’s a military theme, which personally I think is awesome. I realize that it’s not everyone’s cup o tea if you will, but still I think it’s cool. The bar is bullet casings under resin, and military items all over, but it’s far from over the top. It’s actually tastefully done. So right there I’m already in. Now to top it off one of the owners, Brad, who I have talked with a few times, is a super nice guy. Being a Marine Veteran, his beers certainly reflect being a Marine. Brad and the other staff that were there when I have visited have been nothing but friendly and welcoming to me and my family and all the customers that walked through the doors. Great friendly atmosphere and service is not the only thing that got me hooked, the beer is great too!
Before I get too far, keep in mind that the people running this brewery are veterans, so the beer certainly reflects that “military flare”. The beer follows what I would expect from veterans, strong and bitter, much like the coffee you would get in the military. (Even though I was not in the military, I have worked closely with all branches in my career. Trust me, if you haven’t experienced it yourself, the coffee is always made strong). Personally I think the beer is awesome there. I have heard other people say it’s too strong or that it’s gross, but to each there own. I liked everything I tried.
I have not been there when they have food trucks visiting, but they do offer food trucks often. Especially during the summer. They also, being veterans, do charity events benefiting other veterans and other causes.
Simply put, give them a try if you are in the Freeport, Maine area. I think they are worth a try and highly recommend them. I have provided the contact information for them below and a list of the beers I have tried from them. So go check them out, go have an adventure and try new things!! Please Drink Responsibly.
